More about Us
We expect our children to leave us as well-rounded individuals who are working to the best of their ability in academic, cultural and physical pursuits.
We aim at high standards of achievement and, recognising that children learn through a variety of styles, we have developed programmes to enable our students to develop to their full potential as individuals, and to develop values that will allow them to become full members of our New Zealand society.
We believe strongly in a three-way learning partnership between students, their family/whanau and teachers and encourage active participation in all school activities. We hold Three-Way Interviews twice each year.
So that our children will learn and grow we endeavour to provide a positive, supportive, stimulating and safe environment where children understand the reason for routines and rules and have clear behaviour expectations. At times we also use cross-grouping for both Numeracy and Literacy and students move to different classrooms so that their learning needs are met.
We seek to develop in children a desire for life-long learning. Our students will need many skills in the world of the future and we seek to use new technology and foster their inquiry, problem-solving and higher-order thinking skills so that they are able to take risks, tackle challenges and adapt to changing situations and new innovations in the future.
We are a unique country made up of many ethnic groups and strong Maori traditions. These groups give us great cultural diversity which helps to enrich our country. We expect our children to develop sensitivity and understanding of different cultures and beliefs. We offer Kapahaka to our Yr4-6 students during Terms 2 and 3 each year.
The four key values which our school community chooses to emphasise are:
- Perseverance Manawanui – persevering in all my learning and my relationships
- Excellence Hiranga – always striving to do my best with the right attitude
- Equity Mana Taurite – caring, cooperative, compassionate, connecting
- Respect Whakaute – being responsible, showing integrity
The school, built in 1976, is of modern construction in two classroom blocks with an administration area and dental clinic between them. There is a multi-purpose room that is used for assemblies and music and is also the school library. We have a computer suite of 21 computers linked to both the intranet and broadband and wireless internet next to the senior room as well as three to four computers in every classroom. We believe that we are educating our students for the future and so ICT [Information Communication Technology] is a vital tool and is integrated in all teaching and learning programmes. We also have one room set up for the Perceptual Motor Programme [PMP] and junior students work on this Physical Education programme for two terms each year.
The grounds are landscaped and offer a number of play areas with shade trees, a shade house, two tennis courts and two adventure playgrounds. There is also a covered heated community swimming pool with both a learner and adult pool.
With the introduction of dairy farming the rural community has changed from what was previously a predominantly sheep farming area. Blue Mountain Lumber, Stuart Timber and Blue Mountain Nurseries are the main industries in the area. Our students come from both the township of Tapanui and from the rural areas surrounding the town.
